Blue Nights oil painting print of Cordova Alaska’s glacial ice patterns in deep blue tones.

Creating Blue Nights – Glacial Ice from Cordova, Alaska

There’s a certain kind of quiet you only find near a glacier at night. The air is crisp, the world is still, and the ice seems to glow from within. Blue Nights began in that stillness — a moment of reflection, awe, and inspiration drawn from my home in Cordova, Alaska.

Inspiration from Alaska’s Glacial Beauty

Living in Cordova means being surrounded by some of the most breathtaking natural scenes in the world. Sheridan Glacier and Child’s Glacier have always been a source of creative fuel for me. The intricate lines, shifting tones, and crystalline shapes of glacial ice are like nature’s own abstract paintings.

With Blue Nights, I wanted to capture the deep blues and soft shadows of ice under the fading light — that fleeting moment between day and night when the glacier seems to hum with its own energy.

From Canvas to Print: My First Oil Painting

This piece holds a special place in my heart as my very first oil painting. Using walnut oil and rich, pigment-loaded paints, I layered colors slowly to build both texture and depth. The brushwork follows the natural flow of the ice, creating movement while keeping the composition serene.

Unlike watercolors, which demand speed and spontaneity, oil paints allowed me to work deliberately — to study the forms and translate them onto the canvas with precision. Every ridge, every curve of “ice” in Blue Nights is intentional, a quiet nod to the glaciers that inspired it.

Why the Giclée Print is Special

The original Blue Nights has been transformed into a high-quality giclée print, ensuring that every brushstroke and subtle hue is faithfully preserved. Printed on archival fine art paper with fade-resistant inks, it’s made to last — so you can enjoy this piece for decades.

Whether displayed in a living room, office, or gifted to someone who shares a love for Alaska’s landscapes, Blue Nights offers a window into a world of calm and wonder.
